St Luke's Primary School

Recycled Blankets and story telling

2025 St Luke's School Cambridge celebrated 150 years of being built, this project created a very special story quilt.

The centre of the quilt is a Sunflower, this is used regularly to share a message of hope and faith in the school community.

Story telling, drawing and collaborating

All members of the school community were invited to contribute, in design decisions, drawing, stitching and sharing their school experiences.

This quilt will be a part of the school history, and serve as a lasting connection between the church and people who have been part of the shared journey. Cambridge University has many international students and staff, as a result there are many nationalities represented in the school.

This story quilt is used for story telling times, and small performances and will be included in future celebration events.

A wonderful feature of this quilt is the decorative border of stitched hands taken from every child in the school. This idea came from one of the children and is a real expression of the shared and supportive approach to life they experience at St Lukes.

The quilt is made of recycled blankets, stitched onto a heavy-duty canvas backing.

The quilt is round, 5 metres diameter at the widest point and weighs 12 kilos.

The school is one of the Diocese of Ely's multi academy trust Schools.
