About Fair Trade: Material Matters
Fair Trade: Material Matters’ combines hand drawn self-portraits and hand stitching onto recycled wool blankets. This project brings people and places together.
Material Matters relates to Slow Making, exploring the process of long-term collaborative and sustainable actions, materials and communities.
Drawings and conversations are shared in the spirit of creative commons, and restorative actions, a fair-trade exchange. Participants of all ages are invited to draw their self-portrait; they keep the original and provide carbon copies to be hand stitched by the artist onto recycled blankets using woad dyed wool yarn.
The growing collection has become an online community.
Presentation and exhibitions of the project vary, depending on the host venue.

Take part in Fair Trade: Material Matters
We'd love your contribution.
How to get involved:
- You will need 2 sheets of A4 paper, 1 sheet of carbon paper, pencil, pen and mirror.
- Sit at a table looking into the mirror.
- Place the plain A4 paper over the A4 carbon copy paper.
- Using a sharp pencil or pen draw your self portrait, ensuring the carbon copy paper is taking a copy of your drawing.
- Fill out our release form.
- Enclose your completed release from with the carbon copy and post to:

Hosting this project
To see the work develop host Fair Trade: Material Matters for between five days and a month, be prepared to promote and support the artist.
You will need
- Minimum 1 room, 4 tables and 8 chairs.
- Space to exhibit stitched work, on walls, camp beds or display panels.
- Be prepared to invite groups and individuals to take part in workshops for all ages and abilities and provide suitable area to work in.
- A minimum of 5 days to set up and allow access to work and participate.
